The first X Factor winner bagged a £1million recording contract with mentor Simon's BMG label, despite harsh criticism from judge Sharon Osbourne.

Steve's first single went to No 1 and was followed up by his debut album, which also topped the charts.

But he wasn't happy being a covers act, preferring to record his own songs, and argued with his record label - they soon parted company.

He married his fiancee, singer Eileen Hunter, in a Highland castle and disappeared for a while before releasing his self-penned album 40,000 Things last October, which failed to chart.

Steve apparently joined fellow X Factor flop Journey South on the P&O Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry in June as a cabaret act. Enough said.
