Interview: Jennifer Maguire and Jenny Celerier
Were you worried about how you'd be edited?
Jennifer: I had no fear whatsoever. I think you go in there, you do your best, and if you know you've done what you think is right then you've got nothing really to worry about. The most important people to me are my friends and family, and they know what I'm like - that's all that matters. In a business situation, you're very different to what you're like at home or in a personal situation. But women who stand up for themselves seem to be tarnished with the bitch brush.
Jenny: Yes. Acting in a way that men would be patted on the back for. And that's the bit that really, really gets me. There's still so much inequality in the workplace. I still believe that women have to work twice as hard as men for half the recognition.
How would you respond to people saying that you were this year's nasty candidate?
Jenny: I'd put my hands up and tell you that I'm determined, I'm focused, I'm ballsy, I call a spade a spade, I take no prisoners and that's how I approach business. That's how I need to approach business. I work in sales; I work in new business. If I wasn't like that, and I was fluffy and nice and sweet and lovely, I wouldn't get the results that I do - and I get great results for the teams that I work for and the teams that I work with. So at the end of the day it's required. We're a very special breed. Maybe if I were working in a different arena then I wouldn't need to be like that, but you definitely do in new business.
It's been said that your techniques can be somewhat underhand though. For instance, Shazia complained that you'd shafted her in the boardroom after the laundry task...
Jenny: No, Shazia made a huge mistake. She consciously tried to sabotage the success of the team by going home and leaving us. She then complained so much that I took her in for legitimate reasons. None of us like being fired, but let's be big and bold and take it on the shoulders and not try and discredit everybody else in the process.
Do you think any of the other candidates were scared of you?
Jenny: I maybe think that some of them were uncomfortable at times, but it wasn't something that I did intentionally. And I'm definitely not going to turn into a fluffy marshmallow just so other people feel comfortable when I'm there to compete against them.
